Tasting Notes

Robert Parker – 92

In contrast to its muscular and structured 2018 counterpart, de Montille’s 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is already quite charming, delivering an inviting bouquet of plums, sweet berry fruit, dark chocolate and a deft touch of toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, it’s built around a ripe spine of acidity and powdery structuring tannins that gently assert themselves on the finish. [William Kelley, 31/01/2020]

Anticipated maturity: 2025-2050

Vinous – 93

The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru contains one-third whole clusters and is made with 40% new oak. It has a refined and detailed bouquet with mineral-rich red fruit, raspberry and cranberry, wilted rose petal note wafting in with continued aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin. This is a more masculine and grippy Clos de Vougeot, lightly spiced with good density and grip on the finish. It will require five years or more in the cellar but should be worth the wait. [Neal Martin, 10/01/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2024-2045

JancisRobinson.com – 17/20

Barrel sample, racked, with 40% new oak. One-third whole bunch. 44- to 55-year-old vines (another Moillard purchase). Colder climate and dense soils and can be austere. His plantings are in the north of the site and mid slope, planted north to south. Can be tannic and is benefiting from climate change to get less austere. Scented and delicate on the nose, peppery red cherry. Extremely fine tannins, almost imperceptible, and the whole is light-bodied and fresh, almost weightless, but has a subtle intensity and good length. (JH) [04/12/2018]

Anticipated maturity: 2024-2032
