The youthful-looking 2013 Macan is pure Tempranillo sourced from a myriad of plots of old vines from the 90 hectares of vineyards they own mostly in the village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. It fermented in oak vats, with 20% of the volume going through malolactic in barrique and an elevage of 14 months exclusively in French oak barrels. The two wines from 2013 share a common characteristic, which is better integrated oak and a subtler mouthfeel. Other than that, the ripeness of the grapes also seemed more moderate, which has resulted in fresher, more elegant wines. Here there is a mixture of red and black fruit, and some notes of dark spices. The palate shows very polished tannins and good balance, more serious than the Clasico. Yields were lower and they also had to sort and select grapes, so quantities are lower at 52,000 bottles in the case of this Macan. [Luis Gutiérrez, 28/09/2017]

Vinous – 92

Opaque ruby. Intense red and dark berry scents, along with suggestions of toasty oak, cigar box and vanilla. Sweet and focused on the palate, offering juicy cherry and blackberry flavors that open up slowly on the back half. Still a bit youthfully compact, but there’s good energy here. Closes smoky, youthfully tannic and long, with lingering mocha and cherry pie notes. [Josh Raynolds, 05/01/2017]

70% new oak, 30% used. 80% French, 20% US. Deep cherry red. Spicy and richly fruited – the sweetness of blueberry and blackberry, and some vanilla sweetness, but there is s still a rather nice dusty, savoury quality. The fruit seems to smell sweeter – redder – with air. Much more savoury on the palate. There s plenty of fruit but there s also a dry leathery quality and more elegance than I expected. Creamy texture on the mid palate and then chewy tannins on the finish. (JH) [12/12/2016]
