Tasting Notes

JancisRobinson.com – 16

Tasted blind. Deep garnet. Not much on the nose, just a touch leafy. Pretty dry on the palate with only just enough fruit to keep the tannins at bay. Juicy but dry on the finish. (JH)  [27/01/2017]

Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028

Robert Parker – 93

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2013 is deep purple with a gorgeous nose of black cherry liqueur, mulberries, licorice, graphite and spring flowers. The wine is surprisingly full-bodied, round, with sweet tannin, real succulence, lush texture and a stunning finish. This is a major over-achiever in even great vintages, but in 2013 an effort like this is especially impressive. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. With ridiculously low yields of 8 hectoliters per hectare, this nearly 11.5-acre vineyard, now a Premiere Grand Cru Classe, is situated high on clay and limestone soils above Pavie Decesse. The consultant who has been there since the debut vintage under the new ownership in 1996, is Stephane Derenoncourt. He has hit another home run with the 2013. [Robert M. Parker, Jr., 28/08/2014]

Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029

Vinous – 89-92

(85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc; 8 h/h; aged in 100% new oak): Deep, bright ruby-red. Fruit-dominated aromas of cassis, blueberry and sexy sweet spices on the opulent nose. Then broad, smooth and lush on the palate, with initially light and lively tannins turning a little tougher on the back end, which showcases a perfumed violet quality. Dense for the year, but I couldn’t help wondering if this might have been even better with a little less new oak. [Ian D’Agata, 05/01/2014]
