Moss Wood is one of the oldest surviving estates in Margaret River — they first planted Cabernet Sauvignon in 1969 and then Chardonnay in 1976 — and continues to be one of the leaders of the region.

Their Cabernet Sauvignon is particularly noteworthy, having enjoyed Langton's "Exceptional" classification since 1991 alongside the likes of Grange and Hill of Grace, making this one of the most important wines not just in their portfolio but in all of Australia. The Ribbon Vale cuvées come from an eponymous property; all the fruit comes from a single vineyard of 6.36 ha in Wilyabrup planted in 1977.

Moss Wood was founded in 1969, making it one of the earlier estates in Margaret River, along with Vasse Felix and Cullen; improvisation was the modus operandi in those days and they clearly had some good intuition — Decanter featured the 1975 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon as a "Wine Legend" in 2018, noting that this is "considered one of the greatest red wines produced in the region." For reds, Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the most important variety, though the Bordeaux varieties generally are found here. Chardonnay gets the spotlight for fine whites. Semillon is usually found blended with Sauvignon Blanc (either might dominate) but Moss Wood makes one of the relatively uncommon examples of varietal Semillon, which is more closely associated with Hunter Valley, on the other side of the country.Margaret River's story is relatively recent, dating only to the second half of the 20th century, and so doesn't have super-old vines like Barossa; what it does have, though, is an amazing winemaking culture that focuses on high quality, with volume rarely coming into consideration.

Why we like it:

• Moss Wood's Cabernet Sauvignon is one of 22 wines in Langton's Exceptional category, alongside Grange, Hill of Grace, and other legends.
• One of Margaret River's top wineries, and also one of the early commercial producers in this young region.
• All landed in HK.
